A Quick Guide to National Museum of Ireland

The first thing one needs to appreciate about the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin is that admission is free. Not only is admission free, but the museum is housed in 4 locations, giving each discipline its own distinctive venue for ongoing development.

The 4 museums are: Decorative Arts & History, Archaeology, Country Life and Natural History. These four museums represent the most extensive collections in the world of Irish culture, heritage and natural history.

The Decorative Arts & History Museum of Ireland was originally an army barracks. But this is not some mean little clapboard building. Rather, they are a suite of buildings in a "U" shape that look more like a university. The Decorative Arts & History Museum, Collins Barracks, opened in 1997. It features silver, glassware, ceramics, furniture, weaponry with details of folklife and examples of period costume.

The Archaeological National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street first opened in 1890, and is home to over 2 million archaeological objects. The museum is a glorious work of Art Nouveau architecture itself. Finely wrought struts hold up hundreds of feet of skylight, vying for attention with artifacts that date as far back as 7000 BC. There are 7 galleries displaying items that range from Ireland's gold, to prehistoric Ireland, to Viking Ireland, to Medieval Ireland, to ancient Egypt.

The Country Life National Museum of Ireland is a fascinating collection of objects the depict the irish traditional way of life since 1850. The Country Life Museum, located in the breathtaking setting of Turlough Park House in a modern exhibition building, constructed with every modern consideration of museum science, opened on September 2001. The museum contains the exhibition galleries, storage facilities, a conservation laboratory and educational rooms, while the nearby gorgeous Victorian era Turlough Park House offers a restaurant, bookshop and library for visitors, and includes the staff offices.

And last, but certainly not least, is the Natural History National Museum of Ireland on Merrion Street, which was opened by the famous Scottish explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, himself, in 1857. There are 10,000 cabinet-style exhibits displaying an array of stunning zoological specimens. .
